Sewage-cleaning device produces electricity, too

Small units that purify household sewage could provide a source of electricity for urban and remote communities in the developing world, according to researchers.

The units would be populated with Shewanella oneidensis, one of several types of bacteria that can break down organic matter in sewage, producingelectrons and protons. If the sewage is placed between electrodes with the bacteria present, this process can be harnessed to generate an electrical current.

Bill Gates Convinces 40 Billionaires to Give Away Half Their Fortunes

Our favorite charity-worker Bill Gates has successfully signed up 38 billionaires to give away half of their wealth to those less fortunate, in what could be the largest-scale philanthropic work ever.

Together with Warren Buffett, their “The Giving Pledge” project nabbed Larry Ellison (founder of Oracle), George Lucas, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Barry Diller from IAC (an internet media company that owns Ask.com, Bloglines, Vimeo, Match.com and others), along with many others.

Deep brain stimulation shows promise in fight against Alzheimer’s

A team of Toronto scientists is pushing Alzheimer’s research in a radical new direction – testing whether electrodes implanted deep in patients’ brains can jolt their memories into good working order.

The procedure, known as deep brain stimulation, aims to repair faulty nerve circuits with steady electrical pulses from two noodle-thin metal rods buried beneath the cortex. The rods connect to a cable that snakes out of the head and down the neck to a battery-operated regulator embedded below the collarbone. Most often the DBS system is used to treat chronic pain and Parkinson’s disease and in research against intractable depression.

Google to use wind energy to power data centers

Google Inc’s energy unit has entered into a deal to buy wind power from NextEra Energy Inc for the next 20 years to power data centers.

The deal comes less than three months after the giant Silicon Valley Internet search company invested $38.8-million in two wind farms in North Dakota, developed by NextEra Energy Resources, that generate enough energy to power more than 55,000 homes.

Google Energy LLC will begin buying wind power from July 30 from NextEra’s facility in Iowa at a predetermined rate, Urs Hoelzle, Google’s senior vice president of operations, said in a blog on Google’s website.
