
From its diminutive debut in 2001 as the “Sensation Design” Festival on Boulevard St-Laurent to its current status as a multi-award-winning extravaganza of fashion and design that dominates Montreal’s downtown core for several unforgettable days every summer, the Montréal Fashion and Design Festival has all the markings of a true urban Canadian success story as it ramps up to celebrate a decade of progress and transformation in 2010.
The MFDF has become the premiere launch pad for designers’ collections to the consumers and the largest event of its kind in North America, creating a festive atmosphere that shines a spotlight on all that is innovative, creative and diverse about Canadian design, while at the same time serving as an important economic boost for the city of Montréal.

Melbourne. On pilgrimages to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, Indonesian Muslims are not only carrying out haj rituals, says a chief editor of a woman’s magazine.
They have also unintentionally become real life models of Indonesian Islamic fashion, she says.
Jetti R. Hadi, the editor in chief of NooR, a magazine specializing in Muslim fashion, said that during the haj a lot of people complemented Indonesians’ attire. “People would say, ‘Oh, you have such beautiful clothes’. The women always look attractive,” she said recently.

WASHINGTON – A Lebanese-American woman beat out 50 other contestants late Sunday to be crowned “Miss USA,” the first woman of Arab descent to win the coveted beauty pageant title.
Rima Fakih, 24, a resident of the city of Dearborn, Michigan was selected by a panel of celebrity judges including real estate entrepreneur Donald Trump, who also is one of the organizers of the annual event, which was held in Las Vegas, Nevada.
U.S. news report said Fakih’s family moved to the United States while she was a baby and that she was raised in New York City, where she attended a Catholic school, until 2003 when her family moved to Michigan.

Before sky-high Louboutins and Manolos, people (cave men and women, to be specific) wore lace-up flats. And to think, I assumed our prehistoric ancestors walked around barefoot. Silly me — of course, they wore shoes!
And now, there’s proof. Archaeologists discovered the world’s oldest known leather shoe while excavating a cave in Armenia. The 5,500-year-old shoes, which are made out of cowhide and tanned with oil from a plant or vegetable, were preserved under layers of sheep dung. Who knew the very thing you’re trying to avoid stepping on is what could save your footwear?!
